It instantly reads and verifies 230 ID formats, including driving licences, the Citizen Card and 164 kinds of passport from all over the globe. It can be easily installed and used at the point of sale in: newsagents, supermarkets, corner shops, petrol stations, off'licences, tattoo parlours, pubs, DIY and social clubs. It costs from just £1,099 (plus VAT) or can be rented on a weekly basis from £10.

Idscan Biometrics MD Tamlyn Thompson explains: "In June the government announced a 'two strikes and you're' out policy to any establishment selling age'restricted goods like: knives, alcohol, solvents, cigarettes, air guns, videos and games."

This means that any shops or licensed premises failing an underage test twice within three months will lose the right to sell the item in question. AgeSafe is designed to both stop teenagers buying these products and also protect retailers' livelihoods. It's cost'effective, simple and reliable.

To set AgeSafe in context, last year the government tested 2,683 venues selling underage items during its Tackling Underage Sales of Alcohol campaign. Each one was notified in advance and yet a staggering two out of five establishments still served a child illegally.

For more information, please visit: Home Office

AgeSafe is sold with software licence, scanner and a fingerprint upgrade option. It works on any Windows based PC. No additional power is required and it is easy to install. It can be plugged in and ready to use within seconds. All purchases come with a one'year hardware warranty and software support. There's also a 14'day money back guarantee.

The biometric aspect is optional, but can be extremely useful for repeat customers. Once a customer has brought ID to a retailer, he/she can opt to have their fingerprint scanned in. Each time the customer then returns, they simply place a finger on the scanner and it is verified against the original ID.

What's more, nation'wide chains or groups of stores or can network AgeSafe so that customers can make purchases in all their branches ' confident in the knowledge that they will not be embarrassed by a sale refusal and without the inconvenience of carrying valuable ID documents, like a passport

AgeSafe protects all customer data. It restricts access to personal address details and other information contained on ID cards. The retailer can view the ID card and aggregated charts and statistics (like customer age ranges and gender ratios) ' but the ID image is pixilated and all the data is encrypted through triple Data Encryption Standard (3DES). This can only be decrypted by an Idscan Biometrics system administrator through a formal request.

IDSCAN NAME CHANGE

Idscan has changed its name from News @ 10 Limited to Idscan Biometrics Ltd with immediate effect

Tamlyn Thompson from Idscan says "Idscan Biometrics Limited reflects more accurately the direction of the business. Increasingly, we have been involved in developing software solutions for third parties using our in'house expertise in OCR and biometric integration as well as focusing on the development of new products which will have a range and appeal outside the core industries into which we currently sell. In 2008 will see new products, including our Lobby Scan, which will incorporate facial biometrics, fingerprint technology and OCR technology into one visitor management product and our TimeScan, an employee time and attendance system.
Ever since we purchased the In Touch Biometrics technology in December 2006 we have developed new skills to become true integration, design and development innovators and experts; we believe that diversification we enable us to ride through a downturn in business from the leisure industry".

SWINDON TOWN COUNCIL

Swindon Town Council have raised funds to install clubscan in 10 of its highest profile venues. The town had looked at the successes across the country at towns that introduced clubscan and wanted Swindon to join the phenomenon. Rotherham had reported more a drop in crime of more than 30% in the night'time ecomomy after clubscan was introduced across the town.

Tamlyn Thompson of Idscan says "Some towns have experienced a whopping 30% plus drop in disorder in town centers after the introduction of clubscan, we hope that similar results can be achieved in Swindon Town center. The feedback from the operators has been sensational."

CLUBSCAN - DATA PROTECTION COMPLIANT

CLUBSCAN - Data Protection Compliant

Idscan, which produces security, age-verification, data management, biometric and marketing solutions for the leisure, construction and security industries found its flagship product Clubscan under scrutiny after anti-ID card Conservative, Shadow Home Affairs Secretary, James Brokenshire MP, questioned its Data Protection compliance in a letter to the Information Commissioner.

Clubscan which is a high-speed software system that verifies an unprecedented range of personal ID including passports, driving licenses and national identity cards, is used to combat underage drinking, identify violent customers and stem the rise of the UK's emerging 'yob-culture' in the licensed trade. 100% of clubscan customers have never failed an under-age test purchase test, whilst the national average sits above 35%.

As a result of a letter written by James Brokenshire MP to the Information Commissioner, Tam Thompson Managing Director of Idscan requested a meeting with the ICO and subsequently met the ICO on Wednesday the 8th August. As a result of that meeting Phil Jones, the Director of Data Protection Practice and the Assistant Commissioner wrote to Mr Thompson on the 9th August, confirming that there is nothing inherently illegal in venues using clubscan and that considerable attention has been paid to seeking to ensure the data captured is held securely. Mr Jones stated that it is certainly not the case that venues using the system will be in inevitably in breach of the data protection act. Additionally a release has been posted on the ICO website confirming details of this letter.

Assistant Commissioner Phil Jones said ; "Having had the equipment demonstrated to us and seen some of the literature users are provided with reminding them of their data protection responsibilities, we are satisfied that the company takes data protection and privacy considerations seriously. Considerable attention has been paid to seeking to ensure the data captured is held securely. In summary, we are satisfied that it is certainly not the case that anyone using the equipment will inevitably be in breach of the Data Protection Act 1998."

Tam Thompson said of the meeting ; "Meeting with the ICO has been a constructive process, when we first contacted the ICO in 2005 requesting guidance for our new technology there was none available, we will now work with the ICO, who over the next few weeks will visit a handful of venues to see if guidance is necessary and to ensure that any guidance which is issued to our customers is informed and relevant. We have been surprised and saddened that James Brokenshire MP has at no time attempted to contact us with any of his concerns"
